There’s this science community that’s part of the university that takes care of events and activities for science students. Anyone there are 12 roles to be given out every year and a small election was held between the people contesting. I had done very little campaigning but got the 2nd highest votes and a few days later a guy passed a comment saying that I got the highest number of votes only because ‘‘I’ve got a male fan-club”.
Most people might take it as a compliment of sorts but that really diminished the credit for the work I had done during the year, implying that I only got votes because I’m a female as opposed to the reason being that I had contributed to the group on previous occasions. I don’t know if this was his own a way of justifying the fact that he did quite badly in the polls but frankly I was a bit hurt.
What’s worse is that a lot of people outside the group think that too.
(This is definitely discredited by the way because there were more poplar and prettier girls contesting against me who hadn’t done as much work throughout the year too.)
